INTRODUCTION:
A few years ago, I put on social media my definition of culture. I defined culture as “how employees’ hearts and stomachs feel about Monday morning on Sunday night.” Nothing more. Nothing less. Simple, real and very human. This definition resonated with millions of people around the world. It was shared over and over on social media, at conferences, team meetings, email signatures and beyond.
The definition certainly touched people’s minds, hearts and souls. In a divisive world, one of my biggest joys in life is to find our shared humanity and this hit a common thread in the space of universal emotions—shared human experiences. Most of us have experienced suffocating anxiety and dread on Sunday night when we worked somewhere that was toxic and lacked leadership. Similarly, we (hopefully) have experienced the energizing and peaceful excitement on Sunday night when we worked somewhere that had exceptional leadership and shared purpose. But many of us struggle to uncover and even describe culture. Culture is dynamic, illusive and subjective. Culture is hard to measure.
The purpose of this book is to go far beyond my simple definition of culture that went around the world and explore what it takes to create a thriving workplace culture. I believe a thriving workplace culture creates connected, winning teams. The ultimate competitive advantage in any industry is having a connected, winning culture! When there is trust, empowerment and exceptional leadership—there is connected, winning cultures. This book will give you a framework to think about your own culture. Additionally, this book will inspire conversations on areas to improve your culture. Behavior to start, stop and continue. The chapters within this book end with reflections and discussions. Without question, reflection is a key factor for continuous improvement in any space of life—personal or professional. All humans need intervals of noiseless pause.
With extensive research conducted by my leadership development company Employ Humanity and my own experiences working with companies big and small around the United States, I have uncovered six factors that create connected, winning cultures that will collectively energize people on Sunday night. The six factors are memorable, understandable and can easily become core values for any organization striving to be their best. It has been advantageous for Employ Humanity to have well beyond 300,000 engaged social media followers around the world—professionals on the business social media platform LinkedIn. Employ Humanity’s social media presence has made it possible to efficiently gain valuable insights, data and authentic commentary on leadership and culture. If you haven’t yet followed Employ Humanity on LinkedIn, I encourage you to do so to receive relentless inspiration on leadership and culture. Join the excitement and conversation of this book using the social tag #SundayNightLeadership.
A priority when creating this book was to write a book that was relatable and an easy read, not a book that was dense and overwhelming. I enjoy books that are simple, shareable and easy to digest. Let’s say more fresh salad than overcooked steak.
It all starts and ends with leadership. Culture. Profit. Purpose. You name it. Sunday night is the ultimate benchmark “gut check” for our collective leadership in the workplace. Life is too short to feel anxious and sick to our stomach on Sunday night. Yes, there will be stress. Stress is healthy. Challenges and discomfort are healthy. But we must all strive to become leaders that make Sunday night a feeling of excitement and renewal. This is a collective journey of our shared humanity in the workplace and I’m grateful that you have decided to take the first step. Sunday night never felt so good.
To your continued growth,
Bill
