EMPLOY HUMANITY: What is in the DNA of a servant leader?
LAURA WIEGERT: Our brand promise at Investors Community Bank is to walk in our customers’ shoes, and to me that is an integral part of any servant leaders’ DNA.... strive to understand someone else’s perspective; walk in their shoes, and walk beside them on their journey. Until you understand who they are and where they are coming from, you can’t serve them.
EMPLOY HUMANITY: What has been the most important factor(s) in your leadership development journey?
LAURA WIEGERT: Never stop learning, at any level. Learn about people. Learn about your company. Learn about your community. Learn about your industry. Knowledge is growth.
EMPLOY HUMANITY: How does Emotional Intelligence, the awareness and management of your own emotions and the emotions of others, play a role in your leadership?
LAURA WIEGERT: I feel that emotional intelligence enhances my communications, which is a critical leadership skill. By having a gauge on my own emotions I am able to identify why I may be reacting in a certain way and better deal with it. This allows for more honest and real conversations with others, once I get past my own emotions.
Externally it works in reverse... being aware of others’ emotions helps me identify those situations in them, so I can step back to look at why someone else is acting emotionally and probe into what they are feeling. Once we get past that, we are able to have more open conversations.
EMPLOY HUMANITY: Who has made the most positive impact on your life and what is this individual’s attributes?
LAURA WIEGERT: My mom. My dad died when I was 14 and I am still amazed at the strength and courage she demonstrated in raising us after that and keeping our family together. That has continually inspired my own strength and perseverance.
